From July 6, to August 9, 2015, Newhaven Fort
at the invitation of Sarah Michel

Through the lens of the discovery of the Other, divers regimes of cinematographic representation have historically, praised the “elsewhere” and its incommensurability. Several regimes of visuality reveal this “orientalist gaze”: ethnographic cinema (and his pretension to represent extra-occidental cultures in a transparent manner), visual and cultural tourism (and his well known topoi: from postcards of exotic landscapes to travel diaries), measures of controlled visibility in war contexts, the “porno-misery” of humanitarian photojournalism. In the form of a permanent cinema, this video exhibition proposes several possible strategies developed in films of contemporary artists who contravene this “coloniality of vision”, in shaking up the authority of the image production and inviting to converse the exotic visual.
